Re: Best exchange rate for moving large sums from SGD to USD?

JR8:
IB might well route via IdealFX (their site states that), from which the S$100k would buy US$73,580
http://www.ideal-fx.com/
Mustafa, the same right now would buy US$73,910

 How about that, Mustafa beats an FX order at IB

I see what you mean - that totally makes sense though. However my situation is - I have not officially worked at the company A that has an office in singapore before the training ( i only interned there 2 summers ) - then I worked for different company B in the US. Then, I wanted to move to Singapore and it's just on time that the company A has a position in their singapore office - then I apply and accepted the offer.

They put me in an intense training hopefully that I would be helpful in Singapore because the Singapore is developing and they need someone who understands the products from US.

So out of all responses, I think the income is likely the problem why I did not get the pass.

I will talk with my boss and HR. Thank you guys so much. If you do think of any reason and what I should do in this situation, please let me know.

Very much appreciated! Have a good night!

Interactive Brokers geeky? Hmm... depends what you want to do. They are a veery broad/deep/thorough offering for an amateur, perhaps as much as any might want.
But if you don't have an account getting one set up will take time, with them or any such broker. For IB their regional office is in HK, so you'd need an embassy certified copy of your passport to send up there. At a rough guess I doubt you could turn it around in under 2 weeks.

Frankly in the OPs shoes, I'd search here for topics re: changing money. Use key-words like 'The Arcade' and 'Mustafa', and so on, and you will likely find them. Then I'd consider going and changing it cash for cash, and flying it home - declaring in en route as needed.

Carrying such large sums is not exactly a chill-out experience, but there would likely be no cheaper and simpler way of doing it.

p.s. a Ladder-Order for S$100k? That's a strange suggestion, such orders tend to be for where the instrument is illiquid vs the trade size and you fear you'll spook the market with your order. I think the broad global market for the S$ can absorb a whole S$100k sale without having a hissy fit :)

JR8:
Out of interest what do you earn now (roughly)?
Then go to Numbeo and compare the costs of you current standard of living in the US city vs what it would cost in Singapore.
That'll give some idea of the costs for a like for like relo (no raise, no promotion etc). But most people require a material hike on top of their existing package to make the upheaval of relocating worthwhile.

Re: Donald Trump

BBCWatcher:
That's practically always true, especially at this point in the election cycle. Mr./Mrs. "Perfect" is never on the ballot.

Re: Can my girlfriend stay?

BBCWatcher:
And just to round out the answers, marrying your girlfriend works, assuming you are male. (Singapore does not yet recognize same sex marriages.) She would then become eligible for a DP assuming you have an Employment Pass and meet the income requirement.

Re: Best exchange rate for moving large sums from SGD to USD?

BBCWatcher:
Interactive Brokers is extremely low cost, especially if you set a "ladder" of limit prices and are patient. But it's "geeky."

Re: Best Way to Send Reasonably Important Documents to Singapore?

BBCWatcher:

Absolutely, but in many countries (including the two we're talking about) customs and the postal service are parts of the same government. That has its advantages, at least in practice.

Hi - I only graduated last year ...

You are missing the point.

Singapore wants to control cheap foreign Labour. At 3k, and being sent from US, you will be seen as cheap Labour, which means your company should pay and train A Singaporean instead.

If you had been offered 6k or more, you may be seen as "talent"

I see what you mean - I will discuss with my boss and see how things go. Bit I think 6k might be too much...

So you guys all think that should be because of the income problem? I havent discuss the salary increase yet but hopefully if they increase the salary and reapply for Epass, I will get good result -- Otherwise, i don't know what to do :(

Thank you guys so much!!!

Best exchange rate for moving large sums from SGD to USD?

mayz945:
I am leaving Singapore in a couple of weeks and need to transfer about $100,000 SGD to USD.

What method would give me the best rates?

I know p2p websites do not take SGD. Any other suggestions?

Thank you!
